A warm living room. A silver MacBook. Four people gathered around the glow of a Facebook profile page, circa 2009 โ€” the clean WIRED-magazine aesthetic of aspirational internet domesticity. The headline is cobalt blue and confident: Stay connected. Below it, the tagline lands with practiced innocence: Your friends' updates. Your family's memories. Your data: safely filed. The ad never winks. It doesn't need to. Every word is doing exactly what it says, which is precisely what a 2026 reader catches immediately 1.

Card B โ€” The record, 2018โ€“2025.
This is not a retrospective. In 2016, Cambridge Analytica harvested 87 million Facebook user profiles without consent; the FTC responded in July 2019 with a $5 billion fine, the largest ever levied against a tech company at that point 1. In October 2021, Frances Haugen leaked the "Facebook Files": internal research confirming that Instagram worsened body-image problems and depression in teenage girls, and that Facebook had known for years 2. The monopoly held until 1982, when the Department of Justice finally broke it apart 5. AOL's 2001 merger with Time Warner promised something similar: one click to unite internet, media, and community into a seamless connected life. It destroyed roughly $200 billion in shareholder value and left AOL's subscriber data infrastructure as the working template for behavioral profiling online. The pitch in both cases was connection. The product was control. The network changes. The monopoly stays connected.
